Context

A personal menswear buyer in Bishkek. Started on Tilda, then I built my own site with an admin panel and CRM. Marketing is paused, but orders are open.

The idea

Men's shopping in Bishkek has two extremes: low-quality mass market or brand originals with a markup of several hundred percent.

Context is a third option. A personal buyer who orders directly from factories that make clothes for European luxury houses. The same fabrics — cashmere, merino wool, silk — without the logo and without the retail markup. Delivery to Bishkek in 10–12 days.

From Tilda to my own site

The first version of Context ran on Tilda: three products and an order form. That was enough to test the idea, but then Tilda got in the way. There was no proper catalog, no quiz for picking clothes and no order tracking.

So I built my own site from scratch. The core was ready in five days, and I kept improving it for a couple of months.

What I built

Everything myself, from the business model to the code.

  • Positioning and copy. "Based on substance": why a label costs 4–6 times more than the fabric, three principles (Original Fabric, Smart Casual, Pre-order) and an "our price vs. boutique" table.
  • Catalog. Filters by size, color, style and price, with a page for every item.
  • "Build a capsule" quiz. A 3-minute quiz: sizes, lifestyle, budget, occasion. Based on the answers, a stylist puts together 2–3 outfits.
  • My own admin panel. Products, orders, customers, reviews and site copy. I get a notification as soon as an order comes in.
  • Three service levels. A free consultation, an online wardrobe review and an in-person visit with measurements, depending on the order size. Plus gift cards.
  • Policies you can trust. 50% prepayment, an automatic refund if the item doesn't arrive in 12 days, free size exchange, and terms that reference Kyrgyz consumer protection law.
  • Access from China. So the supplier in Guangzhou can open the site without a VPN, I set up a separate copy on a server in Hong Kong.
  • Honesty. Instead of fake reviews: "First reviews coming soon, we don't buy reviews."

Where it is now

Marketing is on pause: right now I don't have time to run Instagram, talk to customers and manage factories every day. There have been no orders yet.

The site still works, though. You can order anything from the catalog: I get a notification, order it from the supplier and bring it to you. Prices on the site are close to current; I confirm them with the supplier before ordering.

If you like something, the easiest way is to message me on WhatsApp.

What I learned

  • Building the site is 20% of the business. The other 80% is traffic, trust and daily sales.
  • Tilda is great for testing an idea in an evening. You need your own site once you know exactly what to automate.
  • Good return policies and an honest tone remove the fear of the first purchase, but you still have to bring in the first customer.
